Q: I am a coach who is new to AYF or AYC this year. What course do I need to take to become certified?
New coaches are to take the introductory Coaching Youth course for the sport they coach:
Coaching Youth Football: The AYF Way
Coaching Youth Cheerleading: The AYC Way
* Coaches must complete the introductory course for the sport coached prior to taking the recertification course.
Q: I am a coach who has already taken the introductory Coaching Youth course to become certified. Which course do I take this year to extend my certification and insurance coverage?
Coaches who have already taken the introductory Coaching Youth course for the sport they coach should take the 2016 recertification course. You must complete the introductory course for the sport you coach prior to taking the recertification course.
Q: How do I purchase online courses?
1. Click on the For Coaches tab and View button below the course.
2. On the next screen, click the Add to Cart button. This will take you to your shopping cart.
3. Click on the Checkout button and follow the prompts.
* You will need a Visa or MasterCard credit or debit card to make the purchase through the website.
Note: You will be asked for shipping information during the checkout process, however nothing will be sent to you, and you will not be charged shipping for the online course. When you are asked to select a "shipping method" simply leave that field as the default selection and proceed through the checkout. No shipping charges will be added.
Q: What is the format of the course?
The courses are web-based, with all content, reading material, animation, audio clips, quizzes, and test being delivered electronically.
Q: How long does the course take to complete?
Coaches should expect to spend two to three hours going through the online course. Careful reading of the PDF book and other materials found within the course will require additional time (well spent!).
Q: Do coaches receive a certificate of course completion?
After successfully completing the course, coaches have the ability to print a certificate of completion directly from the site. However, we will not be mailing certificates.
Q: How do I print my certificate?
To print a certificate of course completion, visit the My Courses area of the site, sign in using your e-mail address and password, and click on the Print Certificate text link. (You cannot print a certificate if you haven’t completed the course and passed the test.) From that screen, you’ll be given the option to print your certificate and e-mail your course transcript.
Q: How long is the certification valid?
Certification is valid for one year from the date of course completion. Coaches need to recertify each year to continue the liability coverage. The recertification course for 2016 is now available. If you took the introductory course in the past and are now looking to recertify to extend the insurance coverage, DO NOT purchase and take the introductory course over again. Instead, purchase and take the fourth edition recertification course.
Q: What are the technical requirements for viewing the course?
Click here for a detailed listing of technical requirements.
Q: What if I don’t have access to a computer or the Internet?
Many public libraries have computers with Internet access free of charge, and community centers often have computers available for public use. Some schools may even offer free access to the general public. Friends, relatives, and neighbors are also places to turn for Internet access. It’s simple—and often free—to set up an e-mail account through major Internet providers such as Yahoo! and Microsoft’s Hotmail.
Q: If I fail the test, how do I retake the test?
A passing score is 80%. If you fail, you can retake the test for no additional charge. To access your retake, simply open your course, navigate to the Menu, and click on the Course Test text link.
Q: How long do I have to take my course?
You have one year to complete the course test from the date you first accessed the course.
Q: I had to stop in the middle of the course. How do I get back to where I left off?
The beauty of online learning is that you do not need to take the course all in one sitting. You can come back to the course as many times as you wish to complete it. We recommend that, when you do log off, make a note of where you left off.
To continue your course, on the My Courses page, sign in to the site using your e-mail address and password, then click on the name of the course you are working on. Once you are in the course, click the "Menu" option on the left hand side of the screen. The menu will expand to show all of the chapters in the course. From here, click on the plus sign to the left of the unit you were working in to see a list of the sections in this unit. Click on the section you want to start with.
Q: May I purchase a single course for another person, such as a spouse, family member, or another coach who doesn’t have their own credit card?
Yes. To purchase a single course for someone else, make sure you sign in and register with the website under the coach’s name and email address. You will change the billing name and address to your own so that the charge for the purchase will be placed on your credit card. When the purchase is complete, the coach will receive an email with a link to their course. *Please note, for administrators needing to purchase multiple courses to distribute to coaches, please go to the For Administrators tab to place your order.
